History / Biography
William (Bill) A. Short was born in Ottawa on April 24, 1903 and died in Ottawa on December 16, 1982. William was a salesman with Kenwood Mills in the 1920’s when W.W. Weed was Managing Director. William’s brother, Harold Short was also working for Kenwood at the time and later became President of the company. In 1928, William managed the Arnprior Hockey Team. Later, he worked for the Post Office Department in Ottawa. During World War II, he served as a Captain in the Canadian Armed Forces. Today, Harold Short’s son, James Short, lives in Braeside.

Donated by William S. Pickworth, nephew of William A. Short, in March 1995 and March 2006. The donor inherited these papers when William’s widow died in 1995.
Scope and Content
Fonds consists of the following:
1. Letter from Kenwood Mills Limited to William Short (March 19, 1928) about the success of the Arnprior hockey team
2. Printed program and menu of the Arnprior Hockey Club dinner (March 29, 1928)
3. Souvenir program of final game for the Senior Amateur Hockey Championship of Ottawa and District, season 1927-1928, between Arnprior and the Ottawa Montagnards. This souvenir program includes photos and biographical sketches of all Arnprior players
4. Photocopied newspaper clippings about the hockey team (1928).
5. Photograph of the Arnprior Hockey team (1928)
6. Photocopies of 2 photos of William Short
7. Photocopies of Jim Short (James W.), General Manager of the Autocentre Rambler on Madawaska Blvd. (where Reid Bros. is located)

9. Photocopy of newspaper clipping of Arnprior Hockey Team in Montreal for the Allan Cup Finals (1928).
10. Photograph of Sand Point Train Wreck (of July 1928). The C.P.R. train was carrying troops to Petawawa Military camp and had a head on collision near Sand Point station. Photo shows derailed cars on Sand Point Road and two men (identified by donor as Stewart Houston and William Short) looking beyond frame. Note article appears in Arnprior Chronicle of Friday July 27th 1928 (front page of hard copy).
11. Arnprior Chronicle newspaper "Peek Into the Past" clipping (Feb 2006), showing Sand Point. Donor identified the old ammunition plant and several cottages as well as the MacPherson's home in the photograph.
