Scope and Content
The file contains documentation about the restoration by the Canadian Conservation Institute in Ottawa of a large 1862 wall map of Upper Canada by Geo. R. Tremaine. This map had been displayed at the school building at Waba Cottage Museum. It had badly deteriorated. In 1993, Peter Hessel contacted the CCI to inquire about the possible restoration of the map, which was then in such poor shape that Peter had it stored in pieces, in two plastic garbage bags in his office. Some of the pieces were only a few centimeters in diameter. The map was expertly restored by the CCI in 1994/95.
See item 26 in file, Waba Cottage Museum in pH Fonds.
1. The 45-page treatment report by the CCI.
2. Clipping of an Arnprior Chronicle article of Jan. 25, 1995, entitled “Rare map of Upper Canada under repair”, by Lauri Loosemore.
3. Photocopy of a manuscript by Peter Hessel for a “Peter’s Point” column, “Sticks and stones” January 1988), which does not mention this map but deals with municipalities spending money on the preservation and restoration of historical buildings and artifacts. On the back of this article, there is a note by Peter Hessel about the Tremaine map and the CCI report, (a query to the then archivist). See also Item 27 in file “Waba Cottage Museum” in Peter Hessel Fonds.
4. Colour photos of the map before, during and after restoration and during the official unveiling of the restored map and installation at the McNab Township Hall on May 17, 1995.
5. Printed invitation for the unveiling of the restored map at the Township Hall on May 17, 1995.
6. Clipping of an article in the Arnprior Chronicle dated May 24, 1995, entitled “Restored map unveiled in McNab”, by Lauri Loosemore. Photo of chief restorer David Hanington and councillor Anne Carmichael unveiling the map. Attached is a p[photocopy of the article.
7. Photocopy from a photo in the Guide, Sep. 13, 1978, showing the map after it was hung (unprotected) in the Waba Cottage museum school house. Over the years, it deteriorated, was vandalized, and fell apart.
