Scope and Content
File consists of numerous copies of Historical Society documents which were identified as "HS" by Peter Hessel's research assistant Kirstin Jeffrey in 1987/88 while conducting research in Arnprior District Museum's vault:
HS 5 Photocopies (14 pages) of a manuscript by Commander Stanley Archibald Nettle (of England), entitled “The Last Laird, Archibald XIIIth MacNab of MacNab”. Commander Nettle is a great-grandson of the Laird.
Photocopy of Marriage Certificate of Archibald John Macnab, Bachelor [Note: probably meaning unmarried at the time, not “never married”] (son of Robert Macnab) and Elizabeth Marshall, Spinster (daughter of Wm. Marshall, Farmer), who were married on August 28th, 1855 at the Parish Church in the Parish of St. Mary-le-Bone in the County of Middlesex. Certificate No. 25. Elizabeth was Commander Nettle’s great-grandmother. This was the Laird’s second [legitimate] marriage - presumably after an annulment of the first.
Photocopy of a handwritten genealogical chart by Commander Nettle. It shows that a daughter Anne Elizabeth MacNab of MacNab was born in 1858 and that the Laird died on August 12, 1860. Anne Elizabeth married Edward Jones, Commander Nettle’s grandfather. Their daughter Nellie Elizabeth Jones married John E. Nettle, Commander Nettle’s father. Commander Nettle was born in 1910.
Photocopy of Marriage Certificate of Commander Nettle’s parents, Edward Jones and Anne Elizabeth McNab (married in 1894 in the County of Stafford).
Photocopy and handwritten transcript of a (copy of?) baptismal certificate of Anne Elizabeth McNab of McNab on June 16, 1858 at the Temporary Episcopal Church at 17 rue de la Madeline in Paris by an Anglican clergyman.
HS 6 Photocopies of several pages from the Arnprior Souvenir Book and Historical Sketch 1831-1909.
HS 7 Two-page typescript called “Research 1925 Ottawa Journal etc.” by M. [Muriel] Saunders, regarding Sand Point. Alexander McDonell. John Young. Janet McDonell.
HS 9 a Two-page handwritten notes by Kirstin on Sand Point Magistrate’s Court June 5th, 1901. McInnes vs. Gillespie. Witness: John Hutson. Mrs. Gillespie accused of striking a boy, John James. Defendant was fined one dollar and costs of $4.80.
HS 9 b Two-page photocopy of part of an article, “Arnprior - The Heart of the Ottawa Valley, from an unlisted source. Photo of grist mill and Malloch’s Tourist Home. Mentions a “Buchanan Book” by A.W.P. Buchanan, K.C., published for private circulation that explains how the Buchanans owned the estate of Arnprior in Scotland. It contains an error: Archibald McNab was not the son of John, but of Robert McNab.
HS 10 a Photocopy of 2 letters to the editor of the Watchman: December 26, 1916 and January 9, 1917 by Colin C. McNab [son of Dugald C. McNab] referring to and quoting a letter from Percival J. Cooney [author of “The Kinsmen”).
HS 11 a Photocopy of handwritten letter dated June 1, 1841, from Angus McNab to James Stevenson [Crown Timber Office]. Regarding timber rights on Lot 3, Concession 3, McNab.
HS 11 b Photocopy of handwritten letter dated August 14th, 1840 from Archibald McNab at Waba Cottage to James Stevenson [Crown Timber Office], re Lot 14, Concession 7, McNab (Daniel McIntyre). Also Lot 13, Concession 7.
HS 11 c Photocopy of handwritten affidavit by (magistrate?) Gerrard ...? in Pakenham, Sep. 2, 1847 re timber rights in Blythefield.
HS 14 a Photocopy of 4-page typescript “From Charles Mcnamara, Arnprior, Ontario (Arnprior Cemetery)”. Inch bhui (Yellow Isle), Charles Middleton; Alexander McDonell, Allan McNab, Michael Roddy. Kennell, Kinnell. History of the Arnprior Cemetery.
HS 15 Photocopy (3 pages) of an article about David Armitage Gillies from an unknown publication. Grew up in Carleton Place and Braeside, was a Queen’s University graduate. Retired as president of Gillies Bros. in 1958 (at 76). Member of Grace-St.Andrew’s Church, Arnprior. Donated the Post Office (Gillies Building) to the town for a library and museum (Centennial project, 1967). His wife was Jessie Herckmer Stewart from Harrowsmith. Had the Algonkins of Golden Lake build a large birchbark canoe (now at Museum of Civilization).
HS 18 d Photocopy (2 pages) of the headings of an 1856 Poll Book used in local elections.
HS 18 e Photocopy of a letter by Thomas Frood, of McNab Township, to A.H. Dowell,
Township Clerk, dated May 1858, regarding expenditures for the Arnprior and Burnstown Road. The original letter is in the file “McNab Council Papers”.
HS 18 f Photocopy of McNab Bylaw 73, dated Feb. 1855, re appointment of assessor, collector, poundkeepers, and pathmasters.
HS 19 Transcript by Kirstin Jeffrey of a petition to the government signed by Alexander McNab, Peter Campbell, James Carmichael, dated December 11, 18. “... deliver us from the last remains of a Feudal System, God forbid that True & Loyal Subjects should be under the painful necessity of seeking an asylum under a Republican Government ...”. The original letter (“too delicate to copy”) had the Museum’s number HS-019/67.64.9 (a).
HS 20 a Photocopy of a newspaper article, “The McNab — Died Alone and in poverty ...”. Part of Craig’s speech to the Caledonian Society [see file, “Craig, James (Judge)”. Also: copy of a postcard showing Arnprior, Scotland. Note: The Laird did not die in Boulonge, but in Lannion, Côte du Nord. He did not die in poverty and did not live on an allowance from his first wife. The article as well as Craig’s speech was based on misinformation. See page 79, “McNab — The Township”.
HS 20 d Photocopy of an article called “The McNab Seeks Revenge” from the Arnprior Chronicle (1970). Part of the series based on James Craig’s address to the Caledonian Society in Montreal (1890).
HS 20 f Photocopy of an article called “Timber Duties Paid For Lavish Living” form the Arnprior Chronicle (1970). Part of the series based on James Craig’s address to the Caledonian Society in Montreal (1890).
HS 23 Handwritten copy (by Kirstin) of a list of teachers at the Burnstown school between 1862 and 1880. At the time of the research, the school had not been identified, but since James Duff taught at Burnstown school, the identity is now established (PH: 2003). See file “Burnstown”.
HS 28 Photocopy of an article by Harry Walker (Ottawa Journal), “When They Carried Their Dead on Shields to ‘Inch Bhui”.
HS 30 d Photocopy of an illustration (National Archives) and brief article re the Laird of McNab from a local paper. The man in the picture, of course, was not Archibald, but his uncle, Francis McNab. Peter Hessel helped the National Archives in 1988 to correct this information.
HS 30 f Photocopy of article by Harry Walker in Ottawa Journal, “Pioneer, Temper Strong But Eyes Weak; Couldn’t Taunt Neighbor Into Duel”. Re Dugald C. McNab duel. See pp. 317/18 in “McNab — The Township”.
HS 30 g Photocopy of article by Harry Walker in Ottawa Journal, “Chats Falls Warfare Ended in Grisly Fashion When Hurons Ate Iroquois Captive”. Nicholas Perrot. (What year?) Monseignat. “Battle of the Chats”, Chats Rapids.
HS 30 h Photocopy of article by Harry Walker in Ottawa Journal, “Bush Villages Greeted Prince On Rugged Upper Valley Safari”. Re Royal Visit [Royal Tour] of 1860. See file “Royal Visit of 1860”.
HS 30 i Photocopy of article by Harry Walker in Ottawa Journal, “Schoolroom Prank Caused International Crisis”. Dugald C. McNab. See p. 31 in “McNab — The Township”.
HS 30 j Photocopy of pictures, captions and article from a local paper (date?) “Historic McNab Plaque Formally Unveiled. Plaque at McLachlin Municipal Park sponsored by the Upper Ottawa Valley Travel Council. Reeve George H. McLean. Article not complete.
HS 31 Photocopy of 2-page typed notes by George H. Cole, “History of the McLachlin Bros. Co. Ltd. at Arnprior”.
HS 32 a Photocopy of 4-page letter from Alex Stewart to his brother in Edinburgh, Scotland, dated McNab, April 13, 1835. “...from this remote part of the world”, “there is no rain here in the winter time, but [snow] ...”, “... I went to Beckwith and brought 2 cows and a yoke of oxen home, have 3-1/2 acres of new land cut down so we made between 45 and 50 lb sugar and expect to make a little more yet”. “James R and Jane are ... 11 Lot, 3 Concession [Lot 11, Concession 11)... A and black but comely Amy is still with Capt. Lebreton [spelled Labritain] March (March the name of the Township) 7 miles on this side of Bytown. I was down seeing her in the beginning of January and she was well and well pleased the Capt. and his wife are very kind to her, we expect to bring her home in a short time.” Giving advice to his brother who also wishes to come to Canada. Interesting immigrant letter!
HS 34 a Photocopy of an article in the Chronicle [July 8-14, 1967]: “Clan McNab”. Re booklet, “A Brief Outline of the Story of the Clan McNab” by Archibald Corrie Macnabb. Ref. to the Laird’s father, Robert McNab, died at Killin on June 8, 1814. Archibald’s sister: Anne Maule who married Robert Jameson, an advocate in Edinburgh, on July 28, 1811. Sister died in 1814. Easter Torry. Also ads: Arnprior Centennial (cartoon), Neil Campbell Insurance, George H. Doucett.
HS 34 b Photocopy of an article in the Arnprior Guide [date?], “The Pioneers of Arnprior” showing plaque “Daniel McLachlin”, also an ad for Boeing of Canada Ltd.
HS 34 c Photocopies of 2 pages with several short articles in the Arnprior Guide, July 1970 (2nd page other paper?]. Photos of John Gillies, Senior, Braeside mill in 1919; old fire engine; Tom McDowell, Ford dealer; Tony Misiferi [Baker Motors].
HS 35 a Photocopy of a 2-page article dated Feb. 7, 1925, “History of Early Ottawa” by H.R. Morgan. Sand Point. Alexander McDonell.
HS 36 a Photocopies of 2 pages with several short articles from the Arnprior Review and South Renfrew Chronicle, Oct. 6, 1876. John Sutherland, the Tailor (obit), Goshen; Dr. McNab; Review Printing House on Harriet Street. Andrew Russell Senior (obit).
HS 36 b Photocopy of two pages, one from Arnprior Chronicle, October 25, 1907. Bridge accident - James B. Hutson killed. Berndt farm. Andrew Young injured. Mrs. Affleck. Rev. Peck. Arnprior Police. Chief Mattson. The other page from unknown paper, reporting the same accident and some White Lake news. Violet Box.
Notes
To simplify the system, zeros in front of numbers have been omitted (e.g. HS 005 = HS 5, etc.). HS stands for “Historical Society” documents which in 1987/88 were researched by Peter Hessel and his assistant, Kirstin Jeffrey, in the Arnprior Museum vault, as part of the research for the McNab book. For example, HS-005 was our code number which was pencilled on envelopes next to the museum’s own numbers. See the index card HS in “Shoe Box 1” (Peter Hessel’s notes at his office in Waba). It is assumed that most of the original documents copied here can be found in the “Arnprior Museum Fonds”. File title [formerly “HS copies”]
