History / Biography
Arnprior was first settled by Europeans in 1825 when Archibald McNab brought 80 settlers from Scotland to the township he named after himself. In 1862, Arnprior was incorporated as a village and in 1892, it was incorporated as a town. The population grew as Arnprior provided employment through its various industries, most notably the McLachlin Mills, the Kenwood Mills, the Canadian Public Booth Co., M. Sullivan and Son, Pfizer and Scheel Windows to name only a few. Over the years, Arnprior has grown into a thriving community providing its residents with a wide range of social and public services.

Records were donated by the Town of Arnprior Clerk Carol Rousselle in March 1997, July 2000 and July 2004.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of by-laws, assessment and collectors rolls, minute books, account books and other records documenting the activities undertaken and decisions made by the Town.

Scope and Content
A by-law mentioning that an Act was passed in Queen Victoria’s 22nd reigning year respecting the authority of any Incorporated Village in Upper Canada to pass by-laws. Regards various unlawful behaviours such as; to say anything profane, indecent, grossly insulting, or blasphemous in public, to be drunk or guilty of drunkenness or disorderly behaviour in public, to disturb or annoy any meeting held for worship, improvement or entertainment, to leave fire wood against a building, to let hogs run at large, to let horses run at large, for any person to expose themselves in public or be guilty of any immoral, indecent, or scandalous behavior in public, to play any noise game such as Marbles, Skittles, or Ball, gamble with dice, run races (on either foot or horseback), or dance to or play profane music on Sundays with any violation of this by-law resulting in a fine of no more than 20 dollars (with some provisions in regards to goods).

This by-law established the position of Poundkeeper who is given the authority to impound any horse, bull, ox, cattle, pig, sheep, or other cattle that is unlawfully running at large or trespassing and doing damage. It was also established with the intent to prevent animals from running at large.

This by-law established a fixed rate of charge for the payment of the Commutation Moneys for Statute Labour. It specifies that for every day of Statute Labour that was rated on the Assessment Roll against a person within the Municipality that said person had to pay of 2 shillings 6 pence for each and every day for which they were rated to the Treasurer.
