Scope and Content
This file consists of:
1. MOVED TO McNAB TELEPHONE CO LTD. fonds in April 2013. Telephone directory of the McNab Telephone Company Limited of White Lake (24 pages). Without date. In addition to a number of advertisements by Arnprior and McNab merchants and an alphabetical list of advertisers, the booklet lists the names of subscribers on the company’s 12 lines, their addresses and telephone numbers and the rings (e.g. 2 L-1s = 2 long, one short). The book also includes the rules and regulations for subscribers. Advertisers include retailers, trades, restaurants, service stations, the Canadian Tire store on Elgin Street in Arnprior, the G.F. McNab insurance agency, Armstrong Bros. farm machinery dealer, Wagenblass grocery store, etc.
2. Photocopy of newspaper article from Chronicle-Guide of Sep. 9, 1987, entitled “Fond memories of the McNab telephone company” by Judy Bedore. Photo of Deputy Reeve R.A. Stewart with “last old-time telephone pole”. First operator: Mrs. Andrew Robertson, followed by Ella Robertson. Switchboards also in Burnstown and Lochwinnoch. Taken over by Bell Canada in 1968.
3. Three-page typed letter from W.E. Smallfield of the Renfrew Mercury (on Mercury stationary) to Alex Stewart in Waba, dated May 10, 1909, regarding telephone poles bought by the Madawaska Telephone Co. at 65 cents each, and other matters regarding telephone service. Dr. Murphy. Letterhead indicates that Smallfield & Son was publisher of the Mercury.
4. Photocopy of 2-page article from a local paper published in the fall of 1968, “The old order changeth, yielding place to new -” by Margaret Hamilton. Re takeover of Horton & McNab Telephone Association by Bell Telephone (Bell Canada) in 1968.
5. Two-page typescript by Andrew T. McNab, “McNab Telephone Association”. Founded in 1910, meetings in White Lake, Glasgow and Arnprior. First president Guli Lodge. Dr. J.E. Murphy, John Brennan, A.M. Robertson, Dan Young, Andrew Carswell. Sold in 1958 to Bell Telephone. Dial telephone service started in 1959.
6. Two-page handwritten (pencil) draft for the above.
7. Copy of printed financial statement and auditors’ report of McNab Telephone Company Limited, as of December 31, 1955. D.W. O’Donnell, President, Duncan E. Stewart, Vice-President, Andrew T. McNab, Sec.-Treasurer. Number of telephones in 1954/55: 190; 84 miles of poles, 346 miles of single wire.
8. Black-and-white 5x8” photograph of the switchboard of the Horton & McNab Telephone system (at Waba Cottage Museum).
9. Two black-and-white photographs of same, taken by Peter Hessel in 1987.
10. Handwritten telephone bill issued by the McNab Telephone Company, Ltd. to D.E. Stewart in Waba on December 31, 1956. The bill covers all calls made in the year 1956 - a total of $52.60.
11. Poster dated 1953 entitled Legal Telephone Guide of Eastern Ontario and Ottawa Hull (reverse side) published by the Ottawa Valley Trust Company. Listings arranged by Lawyers, Court House, Civic & Government, Banks, Telegraphs & Railways. Located in Map Cabinet #1, Dwr 13
