History / Biography
Hans Peschel immigrated to Canada from Berlin, Germany in 1953. After working in Ottawa and Toronto for a number of years he opened his own bakery in Arnprior in 1965. Located on South side of Madawaska Street between Harriet and John Street, the bakery supplied donuts, buns, four different kinds of bread, cookies and assorted pastries. While he did not supply area restaurants with his baked goods, customers kept him extremely busy especially in the summer months with increase cottage traffic.
In 1978, the Peschel's sold the business to Roma Lavictoire. In 2013, the Arnprior Home Bakery building is occupied by Peter's Computer Solutions.
Scope and Content
The Arnprior Home Bakery fonds consists of records of the business which was owned and operated by Ann and Hans Peschel from 1965 to 1978.

1. 8 x b&w photographs of a parade on Madawaska Street showing the Madawaska Hotel and other buildings in the background circa 1967.
2. 10 x b&w photographs showing interior and exterior of bakery circa 1968. One shows owner Hans Peschel.
3. 5 x colour photographs of bakery interior and exterior circa 1960's. One photo shows display of cakes decorated as members of The Beatles which were made in 1964 at the time known as the British Invasion.
4. 8 x 10 colour studio portrait of Ann and Hans Peschel.
5. Agreement for Sale of Arnprior Home Bakery dated 4 January 1978 between Hans Peschel and Roma Lavictoire.
6. News Clippings; one profiles Hans Peschel and Arnprior Home Bakery business and one about a collection of clay ink pots that were found in the rafters of the building during renovation. One clay ink pot is stored with this fonds. It is possible that the building was used as a school before the Arnprior High School was built. See "Mighty Fine Bread and Fancy Pastry" pg 54.
7. Various certificates awarded to Hans Peschel for specialty courses and one letter of recommendation from Algonquin College where Mr. Peschel taught in the Hospitality Business course. File includes Ministry of Colleges and Universities Certificate of Qualification as Baker for Hans Peschel dated 24/01/80.
8. Miscellaneous business receipts.
9. Book "Mighty Fine Bread and Fancy Pastry" - written by Kathryn Boys and Peter Hessel 1994. Contains handwritten message to Hans from the authors and profile of Arnprior Home Bakery business.
