History / Biography
St. John Ambulance activity in Arnprior began in the early 1950's. A Ladies Division was formed in 1962 and by 1967, it consisted of approximately 28 women. The Brigade was formed to assist municipal emergency response personell by providing first aid services at community events such as the annual regatta, activities at the Airport and other town functions. The Brigade provided numerous first aid courses over the years. In 1995, the Arnprior Brigade provided over 1500 hours of service. In 2000, a new mobile van was obtained through Trillium grants and other contributions. People involved with the St. John Ambulance service over the years include Doctor J. S. Bonell, J. Kelly, Cletus Green, Florence Greeley, Agnes Lamourie, Richard Slater, Charles Cheatley, Dave Bourke, Bert Frivalt, Channing Kyer, Johanne Carrey, Rose McCormick, Terry O'Connor and Dan O'Connor.

The photograph of the Ladies Division was donated by Mrs. Jacqueline MacDonald in 2012. The album and other miscellaneous items were donated in 2013 by Branch Manager Ms. Jackie Daniels of Pembroke on behalf of the disbanded brigade.

This small fonds consists of a few records of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, Arnprior 278.
1. St. John Ambulance, Ladies Division Fifth Anniversary photograph shows most of the members in 1967. Photographed by Geoffrey of Arnprior. Members who were not present for the photograph were Dr. J. S. Bonell (Surgeon), Mrs. Nora Murphy (Cadet Officer), Mrs. Isabel Munro (Cadet Nursing Officer), Mrs. Dorothy Fouchard and Mrs. Pearl Strike.

2. 80's Album. This photo album consists of colour photos and newspaper clippings of St. John Ambulance activities such as inspections, award ceremonies and parades in Arnprior and Renfrew. Some photographs are labelled.
3. File containing miscellanous newspaper clippings, colour slides, loose photographs (similar to some in album) and correspondence from Divisional Superintendent Cletus S. Green to the Town of Arnprior outlining its activities in 1953. The letter indicates that a financial report was included but this is not part of the file. File also includes a circa 1950's first aid manual.
