History / Biography
Charles Graham (b. 1829 d. 1891) married Jane Blakely in 1856 at Shawville, Quebec. They had eight children; three daughters and five sons. Charles and Jane moved to Arnprior from Bristol Twp. in 1858.
Malcolm David Graham (b. 1862 d. 1929) was the second son of Charles and Jane Graham. Malcolm married Annie McLean in 1886 at Stewartville Ontario. Their second son was also named Malcolm David Graham (b. 1891 d. 1977). He studied at Queen's University and served in WWI and WWII. He received the Order of Canada in 1973. Dr. Graham married Olive Brunel and moved to Ottawa to set up a medical practice in 1918. His children were David, Hope and Flora Graham. Flora Graham married Ronald Cadieux and their children were Hopemarie, Colleen, Ronald and Lee Cadieux.
George Lindsay Graham (b. 1873 c. 1943) was the youngest child born to Charles and Jane Graham. He worked as a lumber culler for McLachlin Bros. of Arnprior. Archibald 'Stewart' Graham (b. 1911 d. 1983) was the youngest child of George Lindsay Graham and Annie Stewart. Stewart Graham and Doris Gardner married in 1945; their daughter is Julian 'Julie' Graham.
The Graham family cottage is located at Bristol Quebec, near Pontiac Station. Many of Jean Graham's memoires are about life at this cottage.
Acquisition Source
Julie Graham donated material between 1993 and 2013. Hope Cadiuex donated the Presbyterian minute book in May 2008 and other material in 2015.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of several accessions of items from two donors descended from Charles and Jane Graham of Arnprior. Two series have been created to reflect this provenance.
SERIES 1: Consists of material donated by Julian 'Julie' Graham:
1. File containing a three-page Deed of Land detailing the sale of 191 Harriet Street, Lot No. 6 Arnprior in which Jane Graham, a widow, sold a parcel of land to her son George Lindsay Graham, a lumberman's culler, for one dollar dated September 1900. The house was left to George’s son Stewart who lived in the house with his wife until their deaths. The document was drawn up at the offices of Thomas and Hunt, Conveyancers, etc., Arnprior. Also included in the file is a detailed description of the house by Julie Graham dated1994.
2. File containing photographs:
- black & white portrait of Mary Stewart [circa 1905] (daughter of Archibald Stewart) who married Jack Shaw in 1905.

- black & white photograph showing T. C. Wright’s Grocery and Confectionery (of Renfrew).

- black & white photograph of Honours Club trip to Ottawa March 26 1965. Students identified as shown on steps of Parliament with MP Joe Greene.
3. File containing a small booklet written in 1910 by G. E. Neilson called “Many Interesting Facts about Arnprior”, “A Short History of the Arnprior High School 1865 - 1922 “ written by A. H. Ross and a small handwritten journal kept by George Lindsay Graham 1897-1903 while working for McLachlin Brothers.
4. Mounted b&w photograph, circa 1900 by R. A. Ramsay of Arnprior Art Studio of a Scottish group. It is not known if a Graham family member is present in the photograph. (Map Cabinet 3, Dwr 10)
5. File containing photocopies of several scanned photographs from a Graham family photo album. They were scanned in 2014 and returned to the donor. Several photographs show the Graham home on Harriett Street and surrounding area. Photos of Stewart Graham, Robert Graham, Malcom Blakely, Ann McCorriston Blakely, George Lindsay Graham, Williamine Graham "Aunt Bill", Margaret M. Graham, Frederick Graham, Jane Blakely Graham, Thomas Graham Lindsay, Rachael Graham, Annie Campbell Stewart, Elizabeth Stewart, Archibald Stewart, William Campbell, Janet Stewart McGonigal, Agnes Stewart, Robert McGregor, Duncan Carmichael, Alex Carmicheal, Cameron Carmichael, Arther McGonigal, Joe Graham, Heather Graham, Dundy Cranston, John Tierney, Monte Cranston, George Tripp, Fraser Cliff, Jean Carmichael (wedding) and others. Other photos show McLachlin Bros. Boom Camp employees circa 1890, Red Pine Chute, Brennan Lake Depot and camping ground at Turner Chute.
6. File containing 'Blakely Family Tree', prepared by Kay Picken starting with Malcolm Blakely 1807-1877 and Ann McCorriston 1813-1885 and 'The Graham Family in Canada', a family history prepared by Elizabeth (Graham) Jenkinson; updated 2013.
7. File containing 78 colour slides of events/people of Arnprior and area during centennial celebrations in 1967 and construction of the new bridge over the Madawaska River circa 1975. They were taken by Stewart Graham. (not scanned)

SERIES 2 Consists of material donated by Hope Cadieux:
1. St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church minute book 1887 to 1894. The donor's great grandfather Malcolm Graham was an employee of the McLachlin Bros. Lumber Company. He was mayor of Arnprior in 1899, and was for some years an elder and trustee of St. Andrew's and is mentioned in the minutes on several occasions. Pages are loose in this book, so care must be taken to ensure that they are kept in proper order. At the back of the minute book is a copy of the act to incorporate the United Church of Canada which came into force on the tenth day of June 1925 and a copy of a statement of claim in the Supreme Court of Ontario in a court case challenging the competence of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Canada to enter into union with the Methodist Church of Canada and the Congregational Churches in Canada.
2. File of Biographical Information including Birth Certificate of Annie "Dot" Graham (1897-1989) and Obituaries and press clippings re Jean "Birdie" Graham and Annie "Dot" Graham. File contains a Program for Piano Recital of Miss Ward's students from June 1912 in which Dot Graham and Birdie Graham are listed as performers.
3. Type-written Arnprior Historical Society talk given by unknown individual November 1989 about the Armond & Dontigny families of Arnprior.
4. File of handwritten notes and colour postcard about the history of Arnprior District High School written by Annie Graham for the 1962 Centennial celebrations of the Town of Arnprior
5. File containing handwritten letter from "Dot" and "Birdie" from London England to their parents; dated 1926.
6. File containing a photocopy of "The McNab" by James Craig in 1890
7. File containing various memoires of Jean Graham mostly about her life at the cottage.
8. PHOTOGRAPHS:
- black & white portrait of Miss Jean Graham circa 1935
- 2 x black & white prints of "Pirate Dance" taught by Jean Graham for 1929/30 ADHS commencement. Mounted version contains identification of Pirates Pat Baker, Mary Byrne, Leonore Convey and Jean McGregor
- 2 x black & white prints of Dr. Malcolm David Graham with Sir Bernard Montgomery in Ottawa 1946
- black & white portrait of two women (possibly Aunt "Bill" Willamine and Aunt "Maggie" Margaret Graham) circa 1917
- black & white portrait of a young child (possibly Mary McLean Graham) circa 1895. Mary McLean Graham died shortly after this photo was taken.
