History / Biography
The Cheese Factory in Burnstown was owned by Croft & Denny of Lanark who purchased the Rochester house next door to the old school on Lot 17 Concession 2 of McNab Township. This house, with an addition built, served as cheese factory for years. The old church building was moved across the street and was used as curing room. It was later sold and moved out of the Township. Cheesemakers at Burnstown were Frank Halliday, James Ready and Silas Morris.

Donated by Mrs. Jean Denniston of White Lake who knew John and Charlotte Stewart. Charlotte Stewart’s grandfather, John Forrest, was the treasurer for the Cheese Factory.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of original land deed for the property adjacent to the Cheese factory, dated September 27, 1847, between Dugald and Janet Stewart and George Rochester. The instrument covers half an acre of land composed of part of the west half of lot 18, concession 2, township of McNab for six pounds and ten shillings. This property was later the home of John Forrest.
