Scope and Content
The abbreviation N.S. (standing for Neil Stewart, Glasgow, originator of the information) was used by Peter Hessel and Kirstin Jeffrey in their research.
1. N.S. # 9: Letter to the editor of “The Packet and Weekly Commercial Gazette”, September 30, 1850: re McNab Model School. Attached is a resolution by Council, to which the letter refers.
2. N.S. # 10: Item in “The Packet and Weekly Commercial Gazette”, September 1850 re the opening of the Model School on July 8, 1850. George Rochester (of Burnstown), secretary of the trustees.
3. N.S. # 11: transcript (by Kirstin Jeffrey) of “Proceedings of the Board of Public Instructions for the County of Renfrew”. Dugald C. McNab “received a certificate as a teacher of the First Class, having ‘undergone a searching examination in all the branches enumerated in the programme adopted by the Council of Public Instruction for Upper Canada . . .’ “ Other “gentlemen candidates as teachers” mentioned received third-class certificates.
