Scope and Content
From a description of the letter in Peter Hessel's book, McNab: The Township: 'Laird to Allan from Bytown. The Laird had advanced Allan money for boarding in Kingston. He made arrangements to have the farm in White Lake rented and expected it would be kept "in good order for five years". He sent a pair of "Indian rubber boots" for Allan's mother "which are much warmer and better for winter wear than any other", and her spectacles in a new frame. In Bytown he met his "worthy friend" Alex McDonnell and his wife. It seems that the McDonnells of Sand Point had gone to Scotland for a visit: "They went all the way to see Kinnell, and tell your mother that they saw and were perfectly delighted with poor old James McGibbon, he absolutely cried with pleasure when they gave him the news about me; they never saw so fine a place as Inchbuy - they are both the better of their jaunt".
